Built on the traditional principles of Kodokan Judo, Silicon Valley Judo was founded in 2004 by Lorne Mayeda, Lori Mayeda, Tyson Mayeda, Ron Mayeda and Sensei Dan. Recognizing the need for a full-service dojo in the South Bay, they established the dojo to create a space where families could train together and form lasting bonds through the practice of Judo.
With a deep passion for the traditional dojo and a commitment to family values and community building, Silicon Valley Judo provides a close-knit community where members can support and uplift each other as they grow.
A Family dojo
Silicon Valley Judo provides a strong sense of community beyond the mat, connecting students and families through shared training and events. The dojo hosts family-friendly gatherings and social activities, fostering relationships and camaraderie that extend outside of scheduled classes, making it a place where both personal growth and lasting connections flourish.

We also have a large pool of wonderful volunteer coaches!
Silicon Valley Judo regularly participates in local and regional competitions, giving students the opportunity to test their skills and earn medals while gaining valuable experience. Competitions are a key part of the dojo’s training approach, helping students develop resilience, sportsmanship, and confidence.
The Dojo often competes in larger events, like the San Jose Open, a USA Judo-sanctioned point event, which helps students advance in rank and build their competition experience.
SVJ also hosts its own tournaments, such as the SVJ Tournament, which provides a supportive space for students, especially beginners, to engage in tournament play.
